Glyphosate (Group 9), the active ingredient in Roundup WeatherMAX® and Roundup Transorb® HC herbicides, is the cornerstone of many weed management programs across the country. It is also the most widely used herbicide in Canada. In Western Canada, diverse crop rotations have helped keep glyphosate resistance at bay; however, Western Canadian growers have to deal with other herbicide-resistant weeds like Group 1- and 2-resistant wild oats and Group 2-resistant cleavers. Some populations of these weed species are also resistant to multiple herbicide groups, further exacerbating the challenge. Relying heavily on glyphosate to control Group 1- and 2-resistant populations puts great selection pressure on glyphosate. Although it is currently classified as low risk for developing resistance, to keep it that way, glyphosate should be used sustainably.
USE ALL YOUR HERBICIDES MORE EFFECTIVELY
A common misconception is that reducing overall glyphosate use will decrease the risk of herbicide resistance. In many cases, herbicides considered high risk for developing resistance are substituted for glyphosate, putting you at greater risk of developing herbicide-resistant weeds on your farm. Managing resistance isn’t about using less glyphosate – it’s about using herbicides effectively. Weeds outsmart habits, not systems.
When it comes to managing herbicide resistance, the use of tank mixtures can be more effective than alternating single-mode applications (i.e., rotating herbicides). Tank mixing glyphosate with another active ingredient can reduce the selection pressure on both herbicides.
PRE-SEED TANK-MIX APPLICATION: YOUR EASIEST TANK-MIXING OPPORTUNITY
The advantages of applying a pre-seed tank mix are numerous and include the following:
- Starting clean with a pre-seed burndown application helps reduce early-season weed pressure, which helps your crop get off to a good start.
- The pre-seed application is the easiest opportunity to include a tank mix in your herbicide program.
- Relying solely on glyphosate, or any one mode of action, to control weeds increases the risk of developing herbicide-resistant weeds. Using an effective tank-mix partner targets weeds with two or more modes of action at once, which reduces selection pressure for resistant weeds, and is important for preventing herbicide resistance.
- A pre-seed burndown application is an opportunity to manage volunteer glyphosate-tolerant canola by including an effective tank-mix partner.
- By using glyphosate as a base, you’re taking advantage of its effective weed control.
- Even in short rotations, such as canola-wheat, you can add diversity to your herbicide program by using tank mixes throughout the rotation.

Roundup Ready® 2 Technology contains genes that confer tolerance to glyphosate. Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® soybeans contains genes that confer tolerance to glyphosate and dicamba. Glyphosate will kill crops that are not tolerant to glyphosate. Dicamba will kill crops that are not tolerant to dicamba.
