The Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) Guidance Document, Tank Mix Labelling updated March 2023 (Guidance) provides that tank mixes are permitted where specifically identified on a product label or the labels of tank-mixed products contain general tank mix statements. The Guidance provides that registrants will have until 20 December 2024 to update their product labels and marketing, promotional and extension material as required, and users of products will have until 20 December 2024 to adjust their purchasing and production practices to align with the Guidance. Bayer is in the process of applying with the PMRA to have general tank mix statements added to certain Bayer registered product labels.

Accordingly, by 20 December 2024, the following conditions apply to the tank mixing of pest control products:

1. A tank mix with a registered product is permitted where at least one of the registered product labels specifically identifies the other registered product as a permissible tank mix partner (Specifically Labeled Tank Mixes).
2. A tank mix with a registered product is permitted where both of the registered products contain PMRA approved general tank mix statements (Generally Labeled Tank Mixes).
3. Bayer supports Specifically Labeled Tank Mixes that are identified on the Bayer registered product (also a “permissible tank mix”).
4. Bayer supports Generally Labeled Tank Mixes with the applicable Bayer registered product ONLY where the non-Bayer registered product is identified in the Bayer Tank Mix Tool as a supported tank mix with the applicable Bayer registered product (also a “permissible tank mix”).

In addition, the following conditions apply to all permitted tank mixes:

5. Each permissible tank mix partner must also be registered for use in Canada on the crop of interest, including genetically modified crops.
6. A permissible tank mix only includes an adjuvant when specifically required by one of the permissible tank mix partner labels. If an adjuvant is not required on the label of any permissible tank mix partner, then no adjuvant may be added to the permissible tank mix.
7. The application timings of all permissible tank mix partners must be compatible with regards to crop and pest staging.
8. Each permissible tank mix partner is applied in accordance with its registered product label (e.g. Directions for Use, Precautions, Buffer Zones, etc.). In cases where information on the permissible tank mix partner labels differs between them, the most restrictive directions must be followed.
9. The labels for each registered product of a permissible tank mix must be in the possession of the user at the time of application.
10. Always predetermine the compatibility of permissible tank mixes by mixing small proportional quantities in advance.
11. A tank mix cannot occur if a registered product is specifically excluded or contraindicated on the label of either registered product.

General precautionary statement

In some cases, permitted tank mixing of pest control products can result in reduced biological activity (antagonism = reduced efficacy) or increased biological activity (synergism = increased host injury). If a grower uses, or if anyone including any retail, crop advisor, agronomist or provincial extension personnel makes a recommendation to use a tank mix that is not a Specifically Labeled Tank mix identified on the Bayer registered product or a Generally Labeled Tank Mix where the non-Bayer registered product is identified in the Bayer Tank Mix Tool as a Bayer supported tank mix, they are assuming all liability, and Bayer disclaims any liability, for:

12. Any antagonistic or synergistic effects of the tank mixes; and
13. The use of the Bayer registered product.
